Life in a Snow Globe

My class just LOVED this book:
The Snow Globe Family

It's an adorable winter story about two families who love the snow- one family just happens to live in a snow globe. The children were really fascinated by this tale.

Students enjoyed checking out snow globes in Google images and sharing information about their own snow globes.

We had a great discussion about the fun things we could do inside of a snow globe. We added the students' ideas to our HUGE snow globe.
SO CREATIVE!! (use electric blankets and sleep outside, go snow boarding, etc..)
Click on the picture to zoom in.

Then we made a class book by writing about what we would do if we lived in a snow globe.

Finally, we made these:

What Do Snowmen Do at Night?

Snowmen at Night

Last week the students LOVED reading Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. We read it a couple of times and held great discussions about what snowmen REALLY do at night.

We're Going on a Number Hunt...

Number Hunt

Last week the children went on a number hunt around our school.
They all took this job very seriously!
As we searched the hallways, students
recorded all of the numbers they found in their math notebooks.

By the end of our hunt we were REALLY EXCITED about all of the numbers we had found!!

When we returned to the classroom the students had fun sharing their numbers with friends.

Scrapbook Fish

I have a SERIOUS obsession with using scrapbook paper with my growing artists!!!!

First, it was the Scrapbook Turkeys....

(Thank you First Grade Parade for the Santa idea!)

And now...

It's Scrapbook Fish!

The students just L-O-V-E the scrapbook projects.... and I have to admit that I am beyond excited about them!! I just love how each one turns out so unique. It is also fun to watch the students as they sift through the sheets to choose the perfect piece to begin their project.

Check out our adorable scrapbook fish:

After creating and labeling their Scrapbook Fish students wrote a fish fact on the back. Many students used our FISH anchor chart for reference (hooray!).

Our Fish and Snails have arrived!

After predicting what would be placed in our aquarium:

the students anxiously waited....

Until early last week, when the students were pleasantly surprised with guppy fish, snails, and live plants.

My growing scientists spent a lot of time observing the fish and snails and were excited to share their observations with one another.

My friend Gus quickly noted that many of our observations would need to be made with our eyes. He made this sign:

(Please do not touch, LOOK)

After learning more about our fish, we sketched one in our Science Notebooks and labeled it's body parts.

I am so proud of the students!
They asked great questions, made predictions, researched, shared facts, worked well in cooperative groups, used their science notebooks, shared their learning with others, brought in resources from home, and so much more.
We look forward to taking care of our new pets.
Great job, Kindergarten Friends!!
